The Hui-style courtyard is the heart of the Huizhou house: a skywell where four roofs drain inward, bluestone paving line-drawn tight, with fish tanks, bonsai and a stone table as the setting. Surrounded by matou gables under a strip of sky, whitewash mottled and moss on the steps, it compresses clan order and literati taste into one small world - the most rewarding part of Huizhou building. WANGE lays out the skywell, eaves and pierced windows in bricks, restoring the courtyard years of a Huizhou home.
