Saint Basil's Cathedral stands at the southern end of Red Square in Moscow. Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible between 1555 and 1561 to commemorate the victories at Kazan and Astrakhan, tradition credits its design to the architects Barma and Postnik. Nine chapels gather on a single base: a central tent-roofed tower encircled by eight onion domes, each with unique spirals and glazed tiles in red, green, gold and blue. Together with Red Square it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.
