Chengqi Lou in Yongding, Longyan, Fujian, is the largest of the Hakka earthen houses, known as the King of Tulou. Begun in 1709 during the Kangxi era and completed over three generations, it stacks four concentric rings with an outer diameter of more than sixty metres and some four hundred rooms, once housing over six hundred residents. Its rammed-earth walls, over a metre thick, keep the interior warm in winter and cool in summer, while the ancestral hall at the centre reflects the inward-looking wisdom of clan living. In 2008 the Fujian Tulou were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
