The Hui-style archway gate is the ritual threshold between successive courtyards of a Huizhou house: layered brick-carved lintels project outward, inscribed name panels above, and fine mortar joints line the grey brick; through the arch each courtyard frames the next in deepening sequence. Of the three Huizhou carvings, brick carving shows its finest on these gates - pavilions, fishing and farming scenes in a palm-sized frame. WANGE builds the gate and arch in bricks; push one open and another Huizhou skywell opens beyond.
