The Elizabeth Tower is the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. Completed in 1859 from Charles Barry's design with Augustus Pugin's detailing in Gothic Revival, its brick shaft clad in Anston limestone rises 96 metres with seven-metre clock dials on all four faces. Inside hangs Big Ben, the 13.7-tonne hour bell whose strikes open BBC news. Londoners nicknamed the whole tower Big Ben; in 2012 it was formally renamed for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
