The Trevi Fountain in Rome was designed by Nicola Salvi and built between 1732 and 1762 - the largest and most famous of Rome's Baroque fountains. A 26-metre-high, 49-metre-wide palace facade stages Oceanus riding his shell chariot beneath a triumphal arch, flanked by the figures of Abundance and Salubrity, travertine rocks and palace columns merging into a baroque urban theatre. Immortalised by La Dolce Vita and the coin-throwing legend, it is Rome at its most theatrical.
