The Louvre on the right bank of the Seine in Paris began as Philip II's fortress of the late twelfth century, became the royal palace across eight hundred years of building, and opened as a museum in 1793. Its U-shaped ensemble is Renaissance and classical; in 1989 I. M. Pei's glass pyramid rose in the Cour Napoleon - 21.6 metres tall, 673 lozenge and triangular panes - a dialogue of old and new. Among more than 480,000 works hang the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.
