The White House on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington was begun in 1792 and completed in 1800 to a design by the Irish architect James Hoban - a neoclassical Palladian mansion of white Aquia sandstone, 132 rooms in all. Burned in 1814 and rebuilt, it was formally named the White House by President Roosevelt in 1902; the West Wing with the Oval Office, the East Wing and the South Lawn together form the US presidency's home and office.
