The CN Tower by Lake Ontario in Toronto was completed in 1976 at 553.3 metres, holding the record as the world's tallest free-standing structure for thirty-two years. Its hexagonal concrete shaft tapers to lookout levels with a glass floor and outdoor decks, the Space Deck at the top then the highest observation gallery in the world. Overlooking Lake Ontario and the whole skyline, lit silver against the night clouds, it is the fixed point of Toronto.
