The Lincoln Memorial at the west end of the National Mall in Washington was completed in 1922 to a design by Henry Bacon. Modelled on a Greek Doric temple, its 36 columns - each 13 metres tall - stand for the 36 states of Lincoln's lifetime. Daniel Chester French's seated Lincoln, 5.8 metres tall in white Georgia marble weighing 175 tonnes, faces the entrance; the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural are carved on the side walls. Anchoring the Mall opposite the Capitol, it became a landmark of the American civil rights movement.
