The Merlion stands at the mouth of the Singapore River as the national symbol: designed by Fraser Brunner and sculpted by Lim Nang Seng, the 8.6-metre, 70-tonne white concrete lion-fish was dedicated in 1972, its mouth pumping a stream of water into the river day and night. Legend has Prince Sang Nila Utama naming Singapura for the lion he sighted on landing, while the fish tail recalls the old port of Temasek. The statue moved to its present site in 2002, facing Marina Bay Sands across the bay.
