The Flatiron Building, where Fifth Avenue crosses Broadway in New York, was completed in 1902 to a design by Daniel Burnham: a 22-storey steel wedge 87 metres tall, clad in terracotta in Italian Renaissance style and named for its shape - a clothes iron on end. Among Manhattan's earliest skyscrapers, it weds Chicago School structure to Beaux-Arts ornament, its narrowing top catching the wind of the famous Flatiron gusts.
