The Burj Khalifa in Dubai was completed in 2010 at 828 metres and 163 floors - the tallest building in the world. Created by Adrian Smith of SOM, its Y-shaped plan tapers in setbacks around a central core, the form inspired by desert flowers; some 132,000 square metres of curtain wall rose around the clock, and the 124th-floor deck At the Top was then the world's highest observation platform, gazing over Dubai's whole coast.
