Stonehenge stands on Salisbury Plain in England, its main stone circle raised about 2500 BC: some thirty sarsen blocks ring a circle about 30 metres across, capped by lintels into trilithons, five great ones forming the horseshoe at the heart, while the smaller bluestones were hauled from the Preseli Hills some 250 kilometres away. Its axis faces the midsummer sunrise, and its astronomical purpose is still studied. It entered the World Heritage List in 1986.
