About Architecture · Muhammad Ali Mosque,Cairo,Egypt

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali stands inside the Citadel of Cairo. Built between 1830 and 1848 under the Ottoman governor Muhammad Ali to a design by the Greek architect Yusuf Bushnaq, it follows the Istanbul Ottoman manner: a central dome 21 metres across rising 52 metres, twin minarets of 84 metres - the tallest in Egypt - and walls faced inside and out with alabaster, giving the popular name of the Alabaster Mosque. From its court one gazes across all of Cairo, whose skyline it dominates.
