The Taj Mahal stands by the Yamuna River in Agra, India. Begun in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal and largely complete by 1653 under the architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, its white marble body rises about 73 metres under a tear-shaped dome; gemstone inlay traces vines and calligraphy, and the four minarets lean slightly outward so that an earthquake would throw them away from the tomb. Its charbagh gardens and reflecting pool complete the perfect composition, listed as World Heritage in 1983.
