The Empire State Building on New York's Fifth Avenue was completed in 1931 in an astonishing 410 days, rising 381 metres (443 with antenna) and holding the world-height record for forty years. A classic of Art Deco, its masonry shaft tapers to a mooring mast for airships - later an observation crown - lit against the night sky. The first symbol of the Manhattan skyline and of the city's ambition after the Great Depression, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
