The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of Pisa Cathedral. Begun in 1173, it started to lean during construction of the third storey because of uneven settlement, and was not finished until 1372. The cylindrical tower is about 56 metres tall with eight storeys ringed by 207 marble columns; legend has Galileo demonstrating falling bodies from its top. Soil-extraction works at the end of the twentieth century eased the tilt from 5.5 to about 4 degrees. With the cathedral and baptistery it forms the Piazza dei Miracoli, listed as World Heritage in 1987.
