The Spasskaya Tower is the main gate tower of the Kremlin's east wall in Moscow, built in 1491 by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari - the Saviour Tower. Its red-brick shaft reaches 71 metres including the ruby star mounted in 1935 above the seventeenth-century tent roof, and its great clock chimes in the New Year for all of Russia. The Kremlin and Red Square joined the World Heritage List in 1990.
