The Burj Al Arab - the Arabian Tower - opened off Dubai in 1999 to a design by Tom Wright. Three sail-like wings spread from a mast-like spine rising 321 metres, the whole resembling a clipper under full sail. It stands on a reclaimed island 280 metres offshore tied by concrete piles, its skin a double-skin membrane of PTFE-coated fibreglass that glows from within at night. It was the first hotel built at such extravagant scale and cost.
