The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests was built in 1420 at the Temple of Heaven, where Ming and Qing emperors prayed in early spring for the grain; the present hall follows the original design after a lightning fire in 1889. A circular triple-eaved timber structure 38 metres tall, it stands on 28 nanmu columns - four dragon-well pillars for the seasons, twelve for the months, twelve for the hours. Azure glazed tiles evoke the sky under a gilded finial; with the Temple of Heaven it entered the World Heritage List in 1998.
