The Arc de Triomphe stands at the centre of the Etoile at the top of the Champs-Elysees. Ordered by Napoleon in 1806 after Austerlitz and completed in 1836, it is the largest triumphal arch in the world: 50 metres high, 45 wide and 22 deep. Four great piers carry the monumental reliefs of La Marseillaise and The Triumph, and the inner walls list the generals of the Napoleonic campaigns. Since 1920 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the First World War lies beneath, its flame never extinguished.
