The Colosseum in Rome, begun under Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and inaugurated by Titus in AD 80, is the largest amphitheatre of the ancient world: 188 by 156 metres, seating some fifty thousand spectators. Its four storeys of arcades stack Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders - a textbook of classical composition - while the hypogeum below hid lifts and cages for spectacles. Quarried for stone and used as a church in the Middle Ages, it was protected as a sacred site in the eighteenth century and listed as World Heritage in 1980.
