About Architecture · Imperial Hotel,Tokyo,Japan

The Old Imperial Hotel in Tokyo was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1923. Its Oya-stone walls weave horizontal bands with Maya and Aztec motifs in red sandstone - Wright's organic architecture tested in the East. Famously, the hotel opened the very day of the Great Kanto Earthquake and stood unharmed, its short-pile foundation and light structure making it world-famous. The central building was demolished in 1968; its entrance lobby and reflecting pool survive at the Meiji-Mura museum in Aichi.
