Willis Tower, originally the Sears Tower, was completed in Chicago in 1973. Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Khan devised the bundled-tube system: nine square tubes of differing heights bundled into one mass, 110 storeys and 442 metres tall, the world's tallest building for nearly twenty-five years. The bundle freed interiors of bearing walls, while black aluminium and bronze glass sharpen the silhouette; the glass box ledge on the 103rd floor projects 1.2 metres into the void.
