The Maiden's Tower (Kiz Kulesi) stands on a small islet in the Bosphorus off Istanbul. First raised in the Byzantine period and used over the centuries as lighthouse, customs post and quarantine station, the present tower dates from its eighteenth-century rebuilding, a dainty stone base under a timber lantern. Its many legends - from the Greek hero Leander to an Ottoman princess - all keep the name of the maiden. Now a restaurant and lookout ringed by gulls and ferries, it is the most photogenic little building on the strait.
