The Farnsworth House stands by the Fox River in Plano, Illinois, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Dr Edith Farnsworth between 1945 and 1951. The house is a glass box floated above the meadow: eight H-steel columns clamp the roof and floor planes, a single core divides the interior, and floor-to-ceiling glazing wraps all sides - less is more at its purest. A classic of modernist housing, it became a National Historic Landmark in 2019.
