The Chinatown Friendship Archway stands on H Street in Washington, D.C., completed in 1986 to a design by architect Alfred Liu. A painted timber pailou with layered brackets and glazed tile roof carried on two posts, it spans more than twenty metres - among the largest single-span Chinese archways outside China. As the gateway of a quarter formed in the 1930s, it anchors a streetscape of Chinese signage, shops and restaurants at the heart of the American capital.
