The United States Capitol on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., received its cornerstone from President Washington in 1793 and grew over nearly a century to today's form. The cast-iron dome of 1866 rises about 88 metres, with Constantino Brumidi's Apotheosis of Washington fresco over the Rotunda; the wings house the Senate and the House. A neoclassical temple in white sandstone and marble, with the relief of Freedom and Victory on the pediment, it embodies the legislative branch of the United States.
