The Space Needle was built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair from designs by Edward Carlson and John Graham. Rising 184 metres, it looks like a flying saucer balanced on a slender tripod; the top house carries a revolving restaurant completing a circle in 48 minutes, and its low centre of gravity was engineered against wind and quake. The sole monarch of Seattle's skyline, it embodies the space-age aesthetics of the mid-century.
