The corner towers of the Forbidden City were built in 1420 in the Ming dynasty as lookout posts at the four corners of the walls. Plan-wise bent like a carpenter's square, their roof composition is extraordinary: triple eaves and seventy-two ridges interweave cross-hipped and pyramidal roofs into a many-angled pavilion with upturned eaves and a gilded finial - the summit of traditional Chinese roof carpentry. Standing at the wall's ten-metre-high corners, the tower is today the most photographed silhouette of the Forbidden City.
