Sungnyemun, the Great South Gate of Seoul, was completed in 1398 after the Joseon dynasty moved its capital - the oldest of the city's four great gates. A two-storey timber gatehouse with a dignified double-eaved hip-and-gable roof stands on a stone platform, the classic of early Joseon official architecture. Long listed as National Treasure No. 1, it was restored by traditional craft after a 2008 fire and reopened in 2013 as the origin point of Seoul's six centuries.
