The Dome of the Rock stands on the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. Built around 691 under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik, it is among the oldest surviving works of Islamic architecture. Its octagonal plan follows Byzantine memorial tradition; the timber dome, about 20 metres across, is sheathed in gilded metal that blazes in the sun, while mosaics of vines, crowns and calligraphy - without any animal figures - mark the summit of early Islamic ornament, regilded most recently in 1994.
