The Winter Palace on the Neva in St Petersburg was built for Empress Elizabeth between 1754 and 1762 by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli - the summit of Russian Baroque, its emerald walls edged with white pilasters and gilded window surrounds, over a thousand rooms along the river. From Catherine the Great it served as the tsars' residence and treasury, and after the October Revolution became the State Hermitage Museum, ranked with the Louvre and the Met among the world's great museums.
