The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda stands in the Da Ci'en Temple in Xi'an. Built in 652 under the Tang to house the sutras and images Xuanzang brought back from India, it rose to ten storeys under Empress Wu and survives as a seven-storey brick tower 64.5 metres tall in its Ming-era brick shell. The pavilion-style square pyramid tapers storey by storey like a wild goose stretching its neck, climbable inside. A landmark of Buddhism's eastward journey on the Silk Road, it gave rise to the tradition of inscribing new jinshi names at the Yan pagoda.
