The John Hancock Center rises by Lake Michigan in Chicago. Completed in 1969 to a design by Fazlur Khan of SOM, it is 100 storeys and 344 metres tall (459 with antennas), its exposed X-bracing running the full facade - structure and image at once, the case study of the braced tube that changed super-tall design. The braces tighten toward the base where loads gather, and the observatory sits on the 94th floor: a peak of Chicago's engineering aesthetic.
