The Blue Mosque, formally the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, was built in Istanbul between 1609 and 1616 under the architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha. It takes its name from more than twenty thousand blue-and-white Iznik tiles lining the interior; a cascade of domes and half-domes descends to the prayer hall, and six slender pencil minarets were unique in their day. Light through hundreds of windows plays on the blue tiles, where Byzantine and Ottoman traditions meet.
