The China Art Museum in Pudong, Shanghai, occupies the former China Pavilion of Expo 2010. Conceived as the Crown of the East, its red inverted-pyramid cantilevers evoke the dougong brackets of traditional timber building, clad in fifty-six shades of Chinese red aluminium panels rising 69 metres on four great cores. Converted into an art museum in 2012, it houses modern and contemporary Chinese art, and stands as a leading example of translating traditional wooden joinery into contemporary steel construction.
