The Yellow Crane Tower crowns Snake Hill in Wuhan, Hubei. First raised in 223 during the Three Kingdoms period, it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt - seven times in the Ming and Qing alone. The present tower, completed in 1985, rises 51.4 metres with a pointed crown and five tiers of flying eaves whose layered roofs spread like a crane's wings over golden glazed tiles. Immortalised by Cui Hao's poem and the legend of Li Bai laying down his pen, it ranks with Tengwang and Yueyang pavilions among the three great towers of the Yangtze south.
