About Architecture · Potala Palace,Lhasa,China

The Potala Palace rises on Red Hill in Lhasa, Tibet. First begun in the seventh century, it took its present scale in the great rebuilding from 1645. Built up the mountainside in stone and timber, it stands 117 metres high over 13 visible storeys and more than 360 metres long: the White Palace housed administration and living quarters, the Red Palace holds halls and stupas under gilded copper roofs.
