United Nations Headquarters stands on Manhattan's East River frontage, designed between 1947 and 1952 by an international board under Wallace Harrison, with Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer among the contributors. The Secretariat is a 39-storey slab whose green heat-absorbing glass and marble end walls became a textbook of the International Style; beneath the low Assembly block's dome sits the great meeting hall. It remains a landmark of modernist architecture and the stage of world diplomacy.
