Jiayuguan stands at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, five kilometres west of Jiayuguan City, Gansu. Built in 1372 in the Ming dynasty as the western terminus of the Great Wall, it is celebrated as the Mightiest Pass Under Heaven. Three defence lines - inner city, outer city and moat - enclose a 640-metre inner wall about 11 metres high, with the Guanghua and Rouyuan gates in depth, and brick parapets, arrow towers and corner towers facing the desert. It is the best-preserved fortress pass of the Great Wall, answering Shanhaiguan in the east.
