The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge spans between Snake Hill in Wuchang and Turtle Hill in Hanyang. Opened in 1957 as the first road-rail bridge across the Yangtze - the First Bridge over the Great River - it runs about 1,670 metres in nine spans, double-decked with a highway above and a double-track railway below. Its abutment towers wear double-eaved pavilion roofs in the national style above riveted steel spans. Joining Wuchang and Hanyang, it turned the barrier into a thoroughfare and became a protected national monument in 2013.
