The Bell Tower of Xi'an rises where the old city's four main streets meet. Built in 1384 in the Ming dynasty, it is the largest and best-preserved bell tower in China: 36 metres tall in brick and timber, with triple eaves, a pyramidal crown of deep-green glazed tiles and a gilded finial over a square base 35.5 metres a side. In 1582 the whole timber structure was dismantled and moved to the present site - a miracle of pre-modern relocation. Once the city's timekeeper, it now marks the very centre of Xi'an.
