Hanshan Temple lies at Fengqiao, west of Suzhou. Founded between 502 and 519 under the Liang dynasty and named for the Tang monk-poet Hanshan, it is immortalised by Zhang Ji's Night Mooring by Maple Bridge - the midnight bell reaching the traveller's boat. The Puming Pagoda within, rebuilt in 1996 as a five-storey square timber pavilion tower of Tang style over 40 metres tall, revives the ancient plan in which the pagoda anchored the monastery.
