Leifeng Pagoda stands on Sunset Hill by West Lake in Hangzhou. First built in 975 under the Wuyue Kingdom to house a Buddhist relic, the old tower collapsed in 1924 - an event famously essayed by Lu Xun. The present pagoda, completed in 2002, restores its Song-dynasty pavilion silhouette in steel with copper tiles, lifts inside, and a protective canopy preserving the successive historic foundations below. Its panorama over the lake renews the classic scene of Leifeng in the Sunset.
