Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was completed in AD 537 under the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, designed by the mathematician Anthemius of Tralles and the physicist Isidore of Miletus. Its central dome, about 31 metres across, rests on pendentives above four great piers, with forty windows pouring light beneath it so the dome seems to hover - a scheme that changed the history of building. Minarets and other elements were added after 1453, and in 1985 it entered the World Heritage List within the Historic Areas of Istanbul.
