Himeji Castle in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, was built between 1601 and 1609 under Ikeda Terumasa. Its white plaster walls, spreading like a heron in flight, earned it the name White Heron Castle. The great donjon rises 46.8 metres - five visible storeys, six internal levels and two basement floors - linked to three smaller donjons by connecting corridors, the model of the connected-tower castle; 83 structures survive within its ingenious defensive maze. In 1993 Himeji became one of Japan's first World Heritage Sites.
