The shangshanglou - a shop below with homes stacked above - is a common mixed-use type of modern Lingnan and Southeast Asian port cities: retail at street level, family floors above, verandas over the pavement, lit and ventilated by stairs and lightwells. Compressing urban density and street life into a single building, it was the cell of the growing commercial city. WANGE recreates the arcade columns, timber louvres and roof terrace in bricks, reviving life beneath the shop signs.
