Yueyang Tower stands on the old city wall of Yueyang, Hunan, beside Dongting Lake. Its forebear was Lu Su's army-reviewing terrace of the Three Kingdoms; in the Northern Song, Teng Zijing restored it and Fan Zhongyan's Memorial to Yueyang Tower made it immortal - to worry before the world worries, and rejoice after the world rejoices. The surviving hall is Qing-era timber, overhauled in 1983: pure wood, three storeys on four columns, with a helmet-shaped roof - the only one of the three great Jiangnan towers to keep its original fabric.
